Er ist weit über sechs Fuß lang, hager und trägt eine zu weite und zu kurze Lederhose, ein Büffellederhemd ohne Knöpfe und mit zu kurzen Ärmeln und Schuhe, die so oft geflickt wurden, dass sie nur aus Flicken zu bestehen scheinen. Um den Hals trägt er ein unbestimmbar gefärbtes Baumwolltuch und auf dem Kopf einen alten, grauen Zylinder, dessen Krempe bis auf einen kleinen Rest fehlt. Von den Schultern hängt wie eine Husarenjacke ein eingeschrumpfter Gummimantel.
